Christian Genocide in Nigeria: EYN President Breaks Silence, Calls for Action

The President of EYN – Church of the Brethren in Nigeria Rev. Daniel Y. C. Mbaya, PhD, has spoken on the growing Christian genocide in Nigeria, calling on the Federal Government to stop denial, accept reality, and pursue genuine local and international intervention to end the killings.

Delivering his Christmas message to the EYN family and the wider Christian community, the Church leader described Christmas as a celebration of salvation, hope, and liberation, stressing that Christ must remain at the center of Christmas, especially at a time when Nigeria is overwhelmed by injustice, bloodshed, and insecurity.

“Christmas symbolizes the release of those in captivity because of the birth of Jesus Christ. Nigeria today is like the time Jesus was born — a season filled with injustice,” he said.

Christian Genocide in Nigeria and the Biblical Parallel

Reflecting on history, the EYN President noted that the persecution of the Church began during the time of King Herod, who ordered the killing of innocent children. He said today’s Christian genocide in Nigeria mirrors that dark chapter of Scripture.

He acknowledged viral security alerts warning of attacks on the social media, confirming the attack in Garaha Community and  suicide bombings in Maiduguri which happened on the eve of Christmas, but insisted that such threats would not stop Christians from celebrating Christmas.

“Christ has promised that He will never abandon us. We are determined to celebrate Christmas no matter what.”

However, he urged believers to apply wisdom, not fear, emphasizing that “wisdom is profitable to direct.” Christians were advised to avoid night gatherings and remain security conscious throughout the festive period.

Denial of Christian Genocide in Nigeria Condemned

The EYN President expressed deep concern that despite overwhelming evidence, the Christian genocide in Nigeria continues to be denied at the highest levels of leadership.

He revealed that many Nigerians urged the Church to hold a press conference after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, denied the existence of genocide against Christians.

More troubling, he said, was the fact that some Christian leaders and public figures also joined in the denial, including Benue State Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, SGF George Akume, Reno Omokri, and Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Sokoto Diocese.

“This is sad and unfortunate,” he stated.

He clarified that the Church was not silent but chose wisdom to avoid further endangering lives. According to him, EYN engaged other denominational leaders and made national and international presentations highlighting the persecution of Christians.

He also disclosed that a press conference held with Dr. Pastor Paul Enenche of Dunamis International Gospel Centre was deliberately withheld to prevent reprisals and loss of lives.

Federal Government Urged to Accept Reality

Calling directly on the Federal Government, the EYN President said acknowledging Christian genocide in Nigeria is not an indictment of President Tinubu or an accusation of complicity.

“Accepting genocide against Christians and other ethnic nationalities is not saying the President is responsible. It is the first step toward finding solutions.”

He warned that continued denial only worsens mistrust and deepens national wounds.

Message to Muslim Leaders and National Unity

The EYN President cautioned Muslim clerics, including the Sultan of Sokoto and Sheikh Gumi, against dismissing Christian concerns by claiming that Muslims are also victims.

“Such statements create doubt in our hearts and push people to suspect collaboration or sponsorship. This is dangerous for our nation.”

He urged Nigerians to unite and call evil by its real name, without bending the truth to suit political or religious convenience.

Support for International Intervention

Reacting to comments linked to U.S. President Donald Trump, the EYN President clarified that any proposed intervention targets terrorists, not Nigeria.

“He did not say he would attack Nigeria, but terrorists. If we are sincere, we should welcome help.”

He urged the Federal Government to engage the United States Government honestly and seek assistance to defeat bandits and armed Fulani militia, rather than presenting false narratives.

NIN Registration and Empowerment Advisory

The Church leader urged all Christians, especially EYN members, to urgently obtain their National Identification Number (NIN).

He also addressed beneficiaries of the Adamawa State Government empowerment programme under Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, GON, implemented through PAWECA, warning against misuse of funds.

“The money is not for recharge cards, clothes, or phones. It is for empowerment. Buy goats or pigs, rear them, and empower others.”

Commendation of Governor Fintiri

The EYN President commended Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for granting clemency to Sunday Jackson, describing it as “a Christmas gift like no other” and a victory for justice and humanity.

Christmas Message: Love, Forgiveness, and Accountability

As Christians mark Christmas, he called on believers to share the love of Christ, forgive offenders, and recommit to missions and evangelism.

He warned Christian politicians and public office holders, especially those of EYN extraction, to govern with integrity and the fear of God.

“Every leader will one day give account to God, the giver of all positions.”

Remembering the Fallen and the Captive

The message ended with a solemn reminder of EYN members killed by Boko Haram, those in captivity under kidnappers and armed Fulani militia, and the over 88 Chibok girls still held, including Leah Sharibu.

“Just as it was when Jesus was born, innocent lives are still suffering today. We must not forget them.”
