The EYN Agriculture Department has intensified its advocacy for environmental conservation in Dilwachira Community, Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State, calling on community leaders to discourage indiscriminate tree cutting and promote sustainable practices that will protect the environment for future generations.

The appeal was made during an advocacy visit to community leaders in Dilwachira, where the EYN Agriculture Department team discussed tree planting, sustainable agriculture and the need for greater community participation in environmental protection.
The initiative is part of efforts by EYN – Church of the Brethren in Nigeria, in partnership with Mission 21, to support communities through agricultural development and environmental conservation projects.
As part of the partnership, the Dilwachira community has benefited from a tree-planting project aimed at contributing to environmental restoration. The project has also provided farmers with improved maize seed and FARROW Rice seed to strengthen agricultural production and support livelihoods.
During the engagement, the agriculture team urged community leaders to take ownership of the project and ensure that the trees already planted are protected and sustained.
A key concern raised during the visit was the continued indiscriminate cutting of trees for domestic energy and other purposes.
The department encouraged community leaders to educate residents on the environmental consequences of deforestation and promote alternatives that can reduce pressure on forest resources.
The team also highlighted charcoal briquettes as a potential alternative energy source where appropriate, noting that greater use of alternatives could help reduce dependence on firewood and charcoal produced from newly cut trees.
The agriculture team further encouraged community leaders to make environmental conservation part of their community awareness activities, particularly among young people, to ensure that the message of responsible environmental stewardship is passed on to future generations.
The Ardo of Dilwachira expressed appreciation to EYN leadership for selecting the community to benefit from the agricultural and environmental initiatives.
He said the community valued the support and prayed for God’s blessing and wisdom upon EYN as the church continues to undertake programmes aimed at improving people’s lives.
Community leaders also acknowledged the importance of protecting the trees planted through the project and supporting further environmental conservation efforts.
EYN Agriculture Department Inspects Dilwachira Demonstration Farm
Following the meeting with community leaders, the EYN Agriculture Department team visited the Dilwachira Demonstration Farm to assess the progress of the agricultural and tree-planting project.
The Head of the EYN Agriculture Department, Mr. Timothy Mohammed, commended the community for its efforts in maintaining the planted trees.
He observed that the trees were growing well and appeared healthy, describing their condition as an encouraging indication of the community’s commitment to caring for the project.
The progress of the trees, he noted, demonstrates the importance of community ownership in ensuring that environmental projects continue to deliver benefits beyond their initial establishment.
The visit also provided an opportunity for the agriculture team to assess the demonstration farm and encourage continued cooperation between EYN and the community.
The project brings together two important areas of community development: food production and environmental conservation.
Through the provision of improved maize and FARROW Rice seed, farmers are being supported to improve agricultural production, while the tree-planting component contributes to the long-term restoration and protection of the environment.
The partnership with Mission 21 further provides an opportunity to connect agricultural support with environmental awareness, addressing immediate livelihood needs while encouraging communities to protect their natural resources.
For EYN, the initiative reflects the church’s commitment to practical community development and responsible stewardship of the environment.
The success of the Dilwachira tree-planting project, however, will depend largely on continued community ownership, regular monitoring and protection of the planted trees.
The EYN Agriculture Department therefore encouraged residents to continue caring for the trees, plant more where possible and discourage unnecessary tree cutting.
The department also urged community leaders to continue sharing the message of environmental conservation with younger generations.
The healthy growth of the trees at the demonstration farm provides an encouraging example of how community participation, church-led initiatives and development partnerships can work together to address environmental and livelihood challenges.
As the trees mature and agricultural activities continue, the Dilwachira project has the potential to become a model of how sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation can complement each other in rural communities.
The EYN Agriculture Department said it remains committed to working with communities to promote sustainable agricultural practices, protect natural resources and support initiatives that improve livelihoods.
