“Politicians must stop using the masses as commodities — EYN President
The EYN President, Rev. Daniel Y.C. Mbaya, PhD has issued a passionate call to the Federal Government to urgently restore peace and security across Nigeria, particularly in response to the recent wave of killings and destruction of properties in Benue State, and the continued suffering in the northeastern region.
Speaking during a special Sunday worship service in Garkida, Adamawa State, Sunday, June 15, 2025 attended by fraternal guests from the Church of the Brethren in the United States Rev. Dr. David Steele, General Secretary, and Rev. Sharon Norton, Executive Director of Global Mission Rev. Mbaya lamented the worsening state of insecurity and economic hardship facing millions of Nigerians.
“Our country is bleeding,” he said. “The recent massacre in Benue and the endless suffering of people in the northeast must not be treated with silence or political calculation. The government must rise to its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property.”
He decried what he described as the increasing insensitivity of political leaders to the plight of the common people.
“We have found ourselves in a country led by people whom many describe as lacking empathy,” he noted. “The nation is in pain, and the cries of the people are getting louder.”
Quoting with conviction, Rev. Mbaya said,
“Politicians must stop using the masses as commodities — they are human beings with feelings, not objects to be exploited or manipulated.”
He urged those in leadership to act with conscience, humility, and compassion, warning that history will not forget how they handled this moment of crisis.
In the same address, the EYN President renewed his call for the reintroduction of history as a subject in Nigerian schools. “EYN as a church wouldn’t be where it is today if our history hadn’t been preserved. History is not a luxury — it’s a necessity. It helps us understand who we are and guides us toward a better future,” he stressed.
Rev. Mbaya invited churches, educational institutions, and international partners to work together in preserving and promoting Nigeria’s history and identity. “What can we do together as partners to keep history alive?” he asked, appealing for collaborative efforts in national rebuilding.
The service, which welcomed the Church of the Brethren delegation, also served as a reminder of the deep and enduring partnership between the two denominations, united in mission and advocacy for peace, justice, and human dignity.
