The President of Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN), Rev. Daniel Y.C. Mbaya, Ph.D, has joined the global Christian community in mourning the death of Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88.
Speaking during the staff morning devotion at the EYN Headquarters in Kwarhi, Mararaba Mubi, Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Rev. Mbaya paid heartfelt tribute to the late pontiff, describing him as “a true father to all Christians.”
“Though his passing brings grief and pain to many around the world,” Rev. Mbaya said, “we as Christians know that our time on earth is brief. Our hope lies in the resurrection and the promise of everlasting life.”
Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis became a global symbol of humility, compassion, and justice. His legacy is defined by his deep commitment to the poor and marginalized, and his tireless work toward creating a more inclusive and merciful Church. Key highlights of his legacy include Advocate for the Poor, as he consistently championed the cause of the downtrodden and oppressed, advocating for dignity and equity for all, a Promoter of Christian Unity and a Voice for Social and Environmental Justice. His teachings and actions on climate change, economic inequality, and human rights left a lasting impression worldwide.
World leaders and dignitaries have offered tributes to the late pontiff, honoring his spiritual leadership and humanitarian efforts:
- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised him as “a beacon of compassion, humility, and spiritual courage.”
- U.S. Vice President JD Vance recalled the Pope’s comforting homily during the COVID-19 pandemic and expressed solidarity with Christians around the world.
- Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described him as “a great man, a great shepherd” whose wisdom and guidance impacted many lives.
- French President Emmanuel Macron lauded the Pope’s unwavering commitment to the vulnerable and his dedication to justice.
- Nigerian leaders including former Ekiti State Governor Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former Governor Peter Obi also paid tribute, highlighting Pope Francis’ global influence and moral clarity.
According to the Holy See Press, the funeral mass for the late Pope will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2025 in St. Peter’s Square.
In accordance with his wishes, Pope Francis will be buried in a simple grave bearing only his papal name, “Franciscus”, inscribed in Latin—reflecting his life of humility and service.
