The President of the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria (EYN), Rev. Daniel Y. C. Mbaya, PhD, has cautioned believers against the growing influence of false prophets, warning that such leaders mislead people with empty promises and will ultimately face divine punishment.
He made the remarks on Thursday, January 23, 2026, during the staff morning devotion at the EYN Headquarters.
Speaking as part of an ongoing three-day devotional series on the dangers of false prophecy, Rev. Mbaya explained that false prophets often rely on vague and generalized statements such as “before the end of this year, good news will come your way” or “no harm will come to you.” According to him, such statements are not genuine prophecies but calculated probabilities, since in any large gathering some individuals will naturally experience success while others face hardship.
He stressed that these misleading assurances are crafted to attract followers rather than to communicate the truth of God’s word.
Rev. Mbaya further declared that the theme of the day, “False Prophets Will Be Punished,” serves as a solemn reminder that anyone who manipulates divine messages for personal gain, popularity, or material benefit will face consequences.
He warned that the Church has failed in many respects by tolerating greed, compromise, and silence in the face of wrongdoing, noting that the loss of moral clarity has contributed to the rise of false prophets and compromised shepherds.
According to him, prophetic declarations have lost their power because many church leaders are driven by love for worldly things rather than righteousness and truth.
Rev. Mbaya emphasized that victory over evil is not achieved through loud proclamations but through deliberate obedience to Christ’s teachings.
“What defeats the devil,” he said, “is doing good to the one who hates you.”
He urged believers and church leaders alike to call a spade a spade, reject false prophecy, abandon compromise, and return to intentional godly living, stressing that only a courageous and truthful Church can restore hope and moral direction to the nation.
