The President of the EYChurch of the Brethren in Nigeria (EYN) has congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, saying the greatest gift the government can give the nation at this critical time is the safe release of the schoolchildren abducted in Mussa, Borno State, and Oyo State.
In his Democracy Day message, the EYN President called on the Federal Government to make the security of lives and property its highest priority, stressing that democracy can only thrive where citizens live without fear.
According to him, the continued captivity of innocent children abducted from schools in Mussa Ward of Askira-Uba Local Government Area of Borno State and in Oyo State remains a painful reminder of the worsening insecurity confronting the country.
“The only Democracy Day gift Nigerians need now is the release of the abducted schoolchildren in Mussa and Oyo. Democracy should not merely be about marking years of civilian rule but about guaranteeing the safety, dignity and freedom of every Nigerian citizen,” he declared.
The EYN President lamented the anguish being experienced by the affected families and communities, noting that no nation can truly celebrate democratic gains while innocent children remain in the hands of kidnappers.
He urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the immediate release of the more than 80 pupils and teachers abducted in the attacks, insisting that the protection of lives and property remains the foremost responsibility of government.
He further called on leaders at all levels to ensure that the dividends of democracy are reflected in the security and welfare of the people, adding that peace and safety are indispensable for national development.
While congratulating Nigerians on Democracy Day, the EYN President urged citizens to remain united and steadfast in prayers for peace, justice and lasting security across the country.
